Have you seen the movie Shrek? It came out when our son was young so I’ve watched it many times. Plus we had the soundtrack that we listened to every time we drove somewhere (until we accidentally left it in a rental car.)
There are two scenes that I love in that movie.
The first one: when Lord Farquaad questions Gingy about the location of the others, and he exclaims “Not the buttons. Not my gumdrop buttons!” I laugh every time I watch it. (“Okay. I’ll tell you. Do you know the Muffin Man?”)
The second one also makes me laugh: Shrek asks a question and Donkey jumps up and down, shouting, “Pick me. Oh! I know. I know. Me! Me!”
Although Shrek is clearly annoyed, Donkey’s strategy works! Shrek picks him to answer his question! How could he not?
When it comes to being visible, are you like Donkey, enthusiastically drawing attention to yourself amongst the people?
Or do you hang back, wishing that you could just have a quiet word alone with Shrek to share your thoughts, all the while wondering what’s wrong with you because you can’t bring yourself to jump up and down like that?
Maybe you’d still be at home, beating yourself up for NOT going to the meeting to share your brilliance, because gosh darn it, you’re good at what you do!
As far as I’m concerned, there’s no “right way” to be visible. But there is a way that works for you, one that’s easy and fun and facilitates a prosperous business.
Choose a strategy that works for you
I know that there are some of you reading this who would much prefer to be in the background than in the spotlight. Or who find it energetically draining to be online or in large groups – whether you are an introvert or highly sensitive (I happen to be both!)
It’s been my experience that this is only a problem when you try to be someone you’re not.
And that’s when you’re especially at risk of burning out.
In this Master Class I’ll share 5 common misalignments that can lead to a visibility burnout.
